Wood that carries a story. Design that carries it further.

Three exceptional woods. One collection.

WELDWOOD rings feature three distinct natural woods — genuine Scottish whisky barrel oak, genuine American bourbon barrel oak, and genuine Hawaiian Koa. Each has its own origin, character, and story. The specific wood used in each ring is stated in the individual product description.

Scottish whisky barrel oak is reclaimed from retired barrels that spent years maturing single malt and blended Scotch whisky in the distilleries and warehouses of Scotland. Unlike American bourbon, which by law requires new barrels every time, Scotch whisky barrels age and deepen over decades of repeated use — each fill adding another layer of character to the wood. What remains when the barrel is retired is oak that carries the heritage of Scottish distilling: rich amber and brown tones, tight grain shaped by the cool, damp climate of the Highlands or Speyside, and the subtle remnants of everything the wood absorbed over a working lifetime.

American bourbon barrel oak comes from retired distillery barrels that spent years ageing bourbon in Kentucky warehouses. American bourbon law requires that spirit be aged in new, charred white oak every time — once a barrel has done its job, it cannot be used for bourbon again. What remains is wood that carries everything it absorbed: deep amber and brown tones from years of spirit contact, grain patterns shaped by the tree's growing conditions, and the subtle remnants of the char layer applied before the barrel was first filled.

Hawaiian Koa is one of the most distinctive and sought-after woods in the world, native to the forests of Hawaii and found nowhere else on Earth. Koa is prized for its exceptional figure — a rich, curling grain with warm golden and reddish-brown tones that shift in the light. Each piece is genuinely rare, and like the barrel oak alongside it in this collection, no two pieces are alike.

Why choose a natural wood ring?

  • Material with a past: Scottish whisky barrel oak spent decades in working distilleries, absorbing the character of the spirit it helped create. American bourbon barrel oak carries the legacy of Kentucky warehouses and new-charred white oak. Hawaiian Koa has been prized for centuries in Hawaiian culture for its beauty and rarity. All three materials carry a history that no precious metal can match.
  • Genuinely unique: The grain, colour depth, and character of each piece of wood are shaped by its specific origin. No two rings — whether Scottish whisky barrel oak, bourbon barrel oak, or Hawaiian Koa — are ever identical.
  • Warm against the skin: Natural wood brings organic warmth to the industrial strength of tungsten — the combination of materials is as much philosophical as it is physical.
  • A ring that ages well: All three woods will develop a subtle patina over years of wear, their tone deepening and their grain becoming more pronounced. This is not deterioration — it's the material continuing to live.

Natural variation — what to expect

All three woods in the WELDWOOD collection are natural materials, and all vary between pieces. For Scottish whisky barrel oak, variation includes grain pattern, the depth of amber and brown toning from spirit contact and repeated fills, and colour difference between the inner face (darker, spirit-stained) and outer face (lighter, more natural). For American bourbon barrel oak, variation includes the grain pattern, the depth of amber and brown staining from spirit contact, char marks from the barrel's initial firing, and similar inner-to-outer colour contrast. For Hawaiian Koa, variation includes the intensity of the figure — the curling, shifting grain that makes Koa distinctive — as well as colour range from warm gold through to reddish-brown. These differences are not imperfections. They are evidence of authenticity, and they are what make each ring one of a kind. The specific wood type in your ring is shown in the product description.

Built to protect what's natural

Wood requires proper protection for daily wear. Each WELDWOOD ring sets the wood inlay within a tungsten carbide band — one of the hardest materials used in jewellery, rated 8–9 on the Mohs scale. The wood is carefully stabilised before fitting to reduce moisture content, then sealed to guard against the oils and moisture of daily wear while preserving its rich, warm appearance.

With reasonable care — keeping it dry and avoiding harsh chemicals — your ring will maintain its character for years. The complimentary ENDURA silicone band included with every order is ideal for the gym, manual work, or anywhere a metal ring isn't appropriate.

The Foundoria difference

Every Foundoria ring is independently tested to REACH and GPSR safety standards and safe for the vast majority of skin types. Every WELDWOOD ring ships with a complimentary ENDURA silicone companion band, luxury presentation packaging, free UK delivery, and a lifetime warranty. If you're unsure of your size before ordering, a free ring sizer is available on request.

FAQs

WELDWOOD rings feature three distinct natural woods — genuine Scottish whisky barrel oak, genuine American bourbon barrel oak, and genuine Hawaiian Koa. The specific wood used in each ring is stated in the individual product description. Scottish whisky barrel oak is reclaimed from retired Scotch whisky distillery barrels. Bourbon barrel oak comes from retired Kentucky distillery barrels that spent years ageing bourbon. Hawaiian Koa is native to the forests of Hawaii, prized for its exceptional grain figure and warm golden tones.

Both are genuine barrel oak, but their origins give them distinct characters. Scottish whisky barrels are used across multiple decades and repeated fills, building up a denser, more complex spirit character in the wood — typically cooler, more measured tones. American bourbon barrels are used once by law, and charred before filling, which gives the wood its characteristic deep amber staining and subtle char marks. Both carry genuine provenance; the difference is in how that provenance was earned.

Barrel oak — whether Scottish whisky or American bourbon — carries the provenance of the distillery: amber and brown tones from years of spirit contact, grain shaped by the tree's growth, and the subtle marks of a working life. Hawaiian Koa is about visual drama — a rich, curling figure with warm gold through reddish-brown tones that shift in the light. Koa is native only to Hawaii and one of the rarest tonewoods in the world. Both are genuine natural materials; the difference is character, origin, and the story each carries.

Because every piece of natural wood is different. For barrel oak — Scottish or bourbon — the grain pattern, colour depth, and char or spirit markings vary depending on the tree, the stave's position in the barrel, and how long it spent ageing. For Hawaiian Koa, the figure intensity and colour range vary naturally between pieces. These differences are not imperfections — they are what makes each ring genuinely one of a kind. The wood type in your ring is stated in the product description.

The wood inlay is stabilised, bonded, and sealed within tungsten carbide — one of the hardest materials used in jewellery. The tungsten band is virtually scratch-proof. The wood is protected against the moisture and oils of daily wear. With reasonable care, a WELDWOOD ring will hold its character for years, and the wood may develop a subtle patina over time that deepens rather than diminishes its appearance.

All three woods are dense hardwoods, and when properly stabilised and sealed within tungsten carbide, they are well-protected for daily wear. Avoid exposing your ring to extreme impacts or prolonged moisture. For heavy manual work, swap to the complimentary ENDURA silicone band included with your order.

Brief exposure to water — hand washing, for instance — is fine. Dry your ring promptly afterwards. Remove it before swimming, showering, or prolonged water exposure. The wood is sealed for protection, but sustained moisture contact over time can affect any natural material.

Keep your ring dry when possible and remove it before swimming or using cleaning chemicals. Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals. Store in a dry place when not wearing. See our ring care guide for full guidance.

Tungsten carbide cannot be resized after manufacture. If you are unsure of your size before ordering, a free ring sizer is available on request. If you're between sizes, go half a size down — our comfort-fit profile wears slightly larger than a flat-fit ring of the same nominal size. Free size exchanges are available if the first size isn't right.

All three woods are natural materials shaped by variables no manufacturing process can replicate. For Scottish whisky barrel oak: the distillery, barrel age, number of fills, and storage conditions all contribute. For American bourbon barrel oak: the tree's growth, stave position in the barrel, ageing time, and char level all play a role. For Hawaiian Koa: the specific tree, its growing location in Hawaii, and the cut of the wood all shape the figure and colour. The result is the same in every case — a ring that is genuinely unlike any other.

This only applies to barrel oak rings — not Hawaiian Koa. The wood retains its visual character from years of spirit contact, but the sealing process means there is no noticeable spirit scent during everyday wear. Hawaiian Koa rings carry the natural scent of the wood during finishing, which fades after sealing. In all cases, what remains is the character in the material itself.
