Scottish whisky barrel oak is reclaimed from retired barrels that spent years maturing single malt and blended Scotch whisky in the distilleries and warehouses of Scotland. Unlike American bourbon, which by law requires new barrels every time, Scotch whisky barrels age and deepen over decades of repeated use — each fill adding another layer of character to the wood. What remains when the barrel is retired is oak that carries the heritage of Scottish distilling: rich amber and brown tones, tight grain shaped by the cool, damp climate of the Highlands or Speyside, and the subtle remnants of everything the wood absorbed over a working lifetime.
American bourbon barrel oak comes from retired distillery barrels that spent years ageing bourbon in Kentucky warehouses. American bourbon law requires that spirit be aged in new, charred white oak every time — once a barrel has done its job, it cannot be used for bourbon again. What remains is wood that carries everything it absorbed: deep amber and brown tones from years of spirit contact, grain patterns shaped by the tree's growing conditions, and the subtle remnants of the char layer applied before the barrel was first filled.
Hawaiian Koa is one of the most distinctive and sought-after woods in the world, native to the forests of Hawaii and found nowhere else on Earth. Koa is prized for its exceptional figure — a rich, curling grain with warm golden and reddish-brown tones that shift in the light. Each piece is genuinely rare, and like the barrel oak alongside it in this collection, no two pieces are alike.
All three woods in the WELDWOOD collection are natural materials, and all vary between pieces. For Scottish whisky barrel oak, variation includes grain pattern, the depth of amber and brown toning from spirit contact and repeated fills, and colour difference between the inner face (darker, spirit-stained) and outer face (lighter, more natural). For American bourbon barrel oak, variation includes the grain pattern, the depth of amber and brown staining from spirit contact, char marks from the barrel's initial firing, and similar inner-to-outer colour contrast. For Hawaiian Koa, variation includes the intensity of the figure — the curling, shifting grain that makes Koa distinctive — as well as colour range from warm gold through to reddish-brown. Wood requires proper protection for daily wear. Each WELDWOOD ring sets the wood inlay within a tungsten carbide band — one of the hardest materials used in jewellery, rated 8–9 on the Mohs scale. The wood is carefully stabilised before fitting to reduce moisture content, then sealed to guard against the oils and moisture of daily wear while preserving its rich, warm appearance.

The wood inlay is stabilised, bonded, and sealed within tungsten carbide — one of the hardest materials used in jewellery. The tungsten band is virtually scratch-proof. The wood is protected against the moisture and oils of daily wear. With reasonable care, a WELDWOOD ring will hold its character for years, and the wood may develop a subtle patina over time that deepens rather than diminishes its appearance.
All three woods are dense hardwoods, and when properly stabilised and sealed within tungsten carbide, they are well-protected for daily wear. Brief exposure to water — hand washing, for instance — is fine. Dry your ring promptly afterwards. Remove it before swimming, showering, or prolonged water exposure. The wood is sealed for protection, but sustained moisture contact over time can affect any natural material.

Tungsten carbide cannot be resized after manufacture. If you are unsure of your size before ordering, a free ring sizer is available on request.
